Chapter Ten

Kurrax was silent, simply staring up at Evan from across the conference room table, her one good eye transfixed on him. She was still processing what the human had told her. Kurrax knew that she should have expected something like this from Evan. Plans that the rest of the Hegemony would consider insane were his basic tools. Losing some of her men had hurt but if she was being honest with herself the thrill of victory had been euphoric. She had made sure that the names of her fallen men had been noted multiple times in the report. They had died during the first marine action for centuries—they had earned their place.

“I like it,” Kurrax said finally. “It’s smart. I think I liked the bomb idea better, but if Central wants us to take the base intact, then this seems like a good way to do it. My marines will get that worker there safely, along with enough minerals to build a forward base. I do have one suggestion though.”

“Go right ahead, Major,” Evan said. He was glad to hear one of the Kirrans suggesting tactics. It showed they were capable of learning, of breaking free from the strict doctrines the Hegemony had piled atop them. Kurrax was already a little looser from most, she had to be to join the marines, but it was still a good sign.

“Yeah, we would love to hear it.” Byeol was sitting to Evan's right at the table. Sandeep was on watch in the command deck, whilst Tolax and Nira were busy reviewing the day's footage from the ground asset practice. Both humans had taken to it quickly, though neither of them was surprised. Using the ground forces was closer to the Star Commander they were used to than ordering fleets of spaceships around.

“Well, planting a forward base on the surface of that fake planet there is going to draw a lot of attention. Most of the attention if you get what I’m saying. Whilst you’re there causing a ruckus, my marines can try and slip into the station and switch off the guns. I’m no tactical expert, but if you’re building forces right on the surface, then they’re going to have to try and stop you.” Kurrax had pointed excitedly with a finger as she had spoken. “The quicker we can knock those guns offline, the faster the fleet can close in.”

“She’s got a point,” Byeol said. “It might be faster than having to push the enemy forces back constantly.”

“True, but it risks more lives. Our original plan had the marines falling back to our stolen ship once they had escorted the worker. Still a risk, but they're off the front lines at least. I hated losing people. I'm not eager to do that again,” Evan said.

It had been three days since the taking of the enemy ship. Evan had made it a point to research Kirran funeral rituals so he could give the fallen marines a proper send-off. There had a lot of bells involved, a different one for each stage of the ritual, thirty-six in all.
